Title Mercer Ward
Collection 3121-019, Savannah Cadastral Survey, Ward Survey Maps
Object Name Map
Notes The Engineering Department, Savannah Cadastral Survey – Ward Survey Maps (1939-1940)
includes 252 sheets of survey maps of Savannah’s wards prepared by the Works Progress
Administration (W.P.A.) as part of the three-year, $65,000 W.P.A. Savannah Cadastral Survey
project. The city of Savannah is laid out in a system of wards, or blocks of land. The Cadastral
Survey included all wards within the city’s corporate limits at the time. On May 9, 1940, Major H.
U. Wallace, District W.P.A. Engineer, presented Mayor Thomas Gamble with the Ward Survey Maps at
City Hall. The survey was originally intended for use of the local tax assessors, but it has also
proved useful for planning public utilities and improvements, determining property lines, and
tracing the history of buildings and properties.

A companion piece to this collection, lot survey cards for each individual lot within the city’s
limits, is housed in the Chatham County Clerk of Superior Court’s office. The lot survey cards
provide additional information on each individual property, including building construction,
property assessment, and ownership. The lot survey cards were originally given by the W.P.A. to the
Chatham County Tax Assessor’s Office who later gave them to the Clerk of Superior Court.
The lot survey cards are referred to as the Cadastral Survey or the Karney/Carney files.
